Mafia II GDC'10`s gameplay by MitoStorM

Mafia II is a third-person action-adventure video game, the sequel to Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.

It is developed by 2K Czech, previously known as Illusion Softworks, and is published by 2K Games. Originally announced in August 2007 at the Leipzig Games Convention, it was released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in August 2010.

The Mac OS X edition of the game was published by Feral Interactive in December 2011. A version of the game for mobile platforms was developed by Twistbox Entertainment and released in 2010 by Connect2Media.

The Plot

You start out as Vito Scaletta. The setting is in Empire Bay, a wealthy city in which crime flows thoughout. The game starts with a voice over of Vito telling his story of how he came about’s living in Empire Bay. After moving there as a boy, Vito explains how times were tough migrating from Sicily with such little money. As time passes he soon becomes friends with a local criminal named Joe Barbaro. After a robbery goes bad, Vito is arrested and given the choice between serving hard time in jail or being shipped out to serve in the army, which results in him getting shot and being sent home a few years later. Once returned to Empire Bay he reunites with Joe, once again being lured to the criminal underworld, taking various jobs here and there with the dream of one day being accepted into the Mafia family.

Gameplay

I have to say I wasn’t expecting what I found when approaching Mafia 2. Run round and shoot up the world right? Wrong. Mafia 2 is a fantastic mix of great shooting, impressive stealth and well thought out set pieces. Lets start off with the shooting. There is a large variety of weapons to choose in the game which all have a nice feel to them and pretty much do what is expected of them. The pistols is a quick, easy, effective way of popping off guys whilst the tommy guns are rapid but lack the same accuracy. With the game set in the 1940′s – 1950′s the weapons feel necessary within the time period and don’t stray to far away from reality, which is a nice touch. The stealth aspect of the game was a nice surprise to me.

There is one chapter where you are sneaking your way into a slaughter house to rescue two of your guys, the place is populated with the enemy which results in you having to sneak around without being seen or heard. Its keeps the game fresh from all the out and out gun play we are used to whilst giving it that tension that most other games in the genre don’t achieve or even attempt. Outside the the set missions is where Mafia 2 is let down. The open world aspect of the game feels very lenient with not a lot to do but to customise your character a little. When competing with games like Read Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto 4, which embrace the activity’s as a major part of the game, it really stands out when playing through Mafia 2. This is a huge shame as the world 2K Czech have created is beautiful, with impressive detail in every area of the city. Another thing to be applauded is the atmosphere the game sets. Music taken from the era it is set in is a great touch, with over 150 licensed tracks to listen to on any of the 3 radio stations, you never get bored of driving around tapping those feet, which is annoying that the world doesn’t really give you anywhere to drive too outside the story missions.

Graphics

As I said before, Mafia 2 is a beautiful game. If you love the 1940′s-1950′s like me then you will be in awe in the amount of detail 2K Czech manages to squeeze out of the engine when creating Empire Bay. Sure there are some issue’s when it come’s to the frame rate and shadow detailing on the characters but this isn’t enough to detract you from just how impressive the game looks on a whole. The city looks and feels lively with almost every area something different from the last. Even though the cutscenes are created by the in game engine, they don’t suffer in the slightest, bringing beautifully crafted characters to life with bouncing personalities that games like Far Cry fail to engineer.
